Christopher Moree
February 18, 2026The Rev. Christopher Cornelius Moree passed peacefully surrounded by his wife of 70 years and family on February 12, 2026 in the home of his son Ronald and daughter-in-law Tanja in Arley, Alabama where he and Sarah lived for six years and Sarah continues to reside. A devoted husband, father, minister, missions leader, writer, and lifelong servant of the Church, Christopher was born June 1, 1932, in Riviera Beach, Florida. He was born to James and Iva Moree, both natives of the Bahama Islands, and grew up in a loving home with his five sisters. Reared in a family deeply active in the local Church of God congregation, he graduated from Palm Beach High School in 1950. After attending Belle Isle Business College, he felt God’s call to ministry, evangelizing across Florida before enrolling at Lee College (now Lee University) in Cleveland, Tennessee.
While at Lee, he met his future wife, Sarah Fae Danehower of Gadsden, Alabama, daughter of pioneer preachers and church planters. They were married February 26, 1955, in Cantwell, Missouri, beginning a lifelong partnership in ministry that spanned more than six decades and took them to scores of nations around the world. Sarah was an active and vital participant in ministry while also raising their children and faithfully supporting the family.
A lifelong champion of learning, Rev. Moree pursued further education at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan, and at Ontario Bible Seminary in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Intellectually curious and widely read, he believed education was a form of stewardship. This love of knowledge remained evident throughout his life, whether in thoughtful conversation, voracious reading, or faithfully watching and competing along with Jeopardy! each evening. In recognition of his lifetime of service, he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Literature degree by the Church of God Theological Seminary in Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico.
Rev. Moree devoted 67 years to active ministry in the Church of God, serving as an evangelist, pastor, state director of youth and Christian education, and an official in the World Missions Department. His pastoral leadership included congregations in London, Ontario; Lincoln Park, Kalamazoo, Flint, and Troy, Michigan, alongside extensive work with youth ministries in Missouri and Indiana.
His 20-year tenure with the World Missions Department (1981–2000) marked a significant chapter of global influence. He served as Editor of Missions Publications and Administrative Assistant. His ministry took him to more than 100 countries, where he spoke in churches, conferences, and leadership gatherings, inspiring and equipping believers for global outreach.
A prolific writer and editor, Rev. Moree authored numerous articles, columns, and essays for denominational publications and produced important resources for missions education, including manuals for local congregations, anniversary publications, and historical works documenting the growth of Church of God missions. He helped establish and direct both French and Spanish literature divisions for World Missions and edited the long-running publication Save Our World. His passion for history and scholarship led to many years of service on the Church of God Historical Commission from 2002 to 2024.
Beyond his public ministry, Rev. Moree lived with joyful energy and wide-ranging interests. He loved music—singing with enthusiasm and playing the piano, slide guitar, and accordion—and delighted in gathering family and friends around song. He carried a deep love of and respect for the ocean, shaped by his Bahamian heritage and shared with his family on frequent visits to Florida’s shores. He also found great joy in simple pleasures, especially cooking and frying up a beloved “Papa fish” for those he loved.
Athletic and active throughout his life, he enjoyed team sports in his youth and later pursued golf with enthusiasm. He cherished playful winter outings with his children, especially sledding and tobogganing, creating enduring memories marked by laughter and adventure. He maintained many lifelong friendships across decades and continents—friendships he treasured deeply, though he ultimately outlived many of them.
Christopher and Sarah shared a love of travel and adventure, taking 23 memorable cruises together—including one that carried them across the Atlantic Ocean—each journey reflecting their shared curiosity about the world and its people. They also enjoyed many happy family visits to Virginia, Alabama, and the Pacific Northwest visiting with their children and grandchildren.
In 2000, they retired from full-time ministry and settled in Apopka, Florida to be close to family members. They continued to serve as World Missions Associate Field Representatives and conducted informational and fundraising services throughout Florida churches. He also served on the Florida State World Missions Board. They concluded active ministry in 2018 but remained faithful voices of encouragement and wisdom within the Church.
Rev. Moree is survived by his beloved wife, Sarah Fae Moree; his four children and their spouses: Ronald Moree, Tanja Moree, Keith Moree, Daniel Torrence, Stephen Moree, Un Kyung Moree, Melinda Moree, and Elizabeth Sanders. He is also survived by seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; his sister, Bertha Moree Fussell; his brother-in-law, Douglas Bird; his sister-in-law Mary Danehower Higgins, and many beloved nieces and nephews.
Throughout his life, Rev. Christopher C. Moree was known for his unwavering faith, global vision, scholarly contributions, love of learning, and steadfast dedication to the mission of the Church. He was a loving husband, treasured father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, and a beloved brother and uncle. His legacy endures in his family, the churches he pastored, the missionaries he encouraged, the publications he shaped, the friendships he cherished, and the countless lives influenced by his preaching, teaching, music, hospitality, and example of faithful, service.
